Cameras get the attention. The recorder, the cable and the network decide whether the system still works in two years.

Most of the camera systems we get called out to fix do not have a camera problem. They have a recorder that was undersized, cable that was terminated badly, a PoE switch running at its limit, or a remote-viewing setup that broke the day the internet provider changed the router. All of that is avoidable at install for very little extra, and expensive to unwind afterward.

Sizing the recorder and the storage

An NVR records IP cameras over the network. A DVR records older analogue cameras over coax, and there is still a lot of serviceable coax in Guelph's older commercial buildings — reusing it is often the cheapest good decision available. Either way, three numbers decide the recorder: how many cameras, at what resolution and frame rate, and how many days back you want to be able to look.

That last number is the one people guess at. A useful way to pick it: think of the last time you actually needed footage and how long it took you to find out you needed it. A delivery dispute surfaces in days. A customer claim or an insurance question can surface in weeks. Whatever you choose, the drive gets sized for it with headroom, on surveillance-rated drives that are built for continuous write rather than desktop drives that are not. Recording mode matters too — continuous recording on every camera eats storage several times faster than motion recording, and the right answer is often a mix, with the till or the dock always on and the back fence on motion.

Cabling done to spec

  • Solid-copper Cat6 for permanent runs. Copper-clad aluminium is cheaper, carries PoE poorly over distance, and is a large share of the failures we get called to.
  • Exterior runs in exterior-rated cable, in conduit where exposed, supported properly rather than zip-tied to a downspout.
  • Runs kept inside the 100-metre limit, with an intermediate switch, fibre or a wireless bridge where the site exceeds it.
  • Cable kept away from parallel runs of electrical wiring and out of the path of fluorescent ballasts and motors.
  • Terminations tested, not assumed. A run that shows link but fails at three in the morning in August is a termination problem and it will not fix itself.
  • Penetrations sealed, and fire-rated separations respected in commercial buildings.
  • Both ends labelled, so the next person to touch it is not tracing cable with a toner.

PoE budget, which is where cheap systems quietly fail

Every PoE switch has a total power budget, and every camera draws from it. Cameras with heaters for winter, motorised zoom, or built-in illumination draw considerably more than a basic fixed dome. A switch sized exactly to the camera count on a mild day will start dropping cameras on the first cold night when the heaters kick in. The switch gets specified with headroom, and the recorder's own built-in PoE ports get checked against the actual load rather than the port count.

Remote viewing that keeps working

Getting the app working on the day is easy. Having it still work after a router swap, a provider change or a firmware update is the part that takes doing properly. Practically that means the recorder on a fixed local address, the manufacturer's proper remote-access path rather than forwarding ports carelessly, default credentials changed on every device including the cameras, firmware updated at install, and separate accounts for separate people instead of one shared login. Then it gets tested on your phone, on your data rather than your Wi-Fi, before anyone leaves.

Cameras on the network, and keeping them out of the way

Cameras generate constant traffic. On a business network that shares a connection with point of sale, phones and staff, cameras belong on their own segment so they cannot interfere with the things that make you money and cannot be reached casually from the guest Wi-Fi. On a house it matters less, but keeping cameras off the same flat network as everything else is still the better build and costs nothing extra at install.

Cabling during construction and renovation

If you are building, adding on, or gutting a unit, run the camera cable before the drywall. It is a fraction of the cost and it removes every hard decision later. Pull spares while the walls are open — the second run is nearly free at that point and expensive forever after.

Can you reuse the cable that is already in my building?

Often, yes, and it is usually the biggest saving available. Existing coax can carry modern analogue-over-coax cameras, and existing network cable can carry IP cameras if it tests clean and is real copper. It gets tested before anything is promised, because reusing bad cable just moves the problem.

Does the system still record if my internet goes down?

Yes. The recorder is on site and keeps writing regardless. What you lose during an outage is remote viewing and any notifications, and both come back on their own when the connection does. That is the main practical argument for a local recorder over a cloud-only camera.
